Discovery / LP / 2009

This album is  a couple of years old but still gets lots of airplay, especially during the summer. One of my all-time favorite tracks on here is "Swing Tree." The first few seconds of this song will (possibly) get you hooked for months...or, in my case, years. Definitely check out the rest of the album though.

Baltimore-based bedroom electronic pop musician Dan Deacon has made a thrilling, buzzing little album that cagily mixes the throwaway with the epic. The record's centerpiece, a paean to Deacon's hometown called "Wham City," is so smartly constructed, anthemic, and lush, it makes Sufjan Stephens look like a confused, overreaching Boy Scout. While on the subject of comparisons, Deacon is repeatedly compared to Daniel Johnston in interviews. And sure, they both can display a love for whimsy and have been known to record using very inexpensive means, but Johnson seems to have such a wellspring of confusion and fear that he's working from. There's a euphoric thrill to Deacon's squeaky, looped-out music. The opening tune "Woody Woodpecker" piles so many chintzy and cheesy elements together it should be the most annoying thing ever. But it's expertly crafted and kaleidoscopic, and it will only annoy people who hate fun. You should take this song, or the entire album, with you on a first date with you and play it for that person. If they do not like it, you should never date them again, even if they are very rich. --Mike McGonigal

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. / Horse Power - EP / 2010

One of my favorite releases from last year. The tags speak for itself- my favorite tracks are "Vocal Chords" and their rendition of the Beach Boys' "God Only Knows." Review: For a strange day, here’s an equally impressive EP from Brothertiger, an up-and-coming chill artist (chillist?) from Toledo, Ohio. Of the normal fare, the stand-outs are “Evening Glow” and “A House of Many Ghosts”. The added remix to Vision Tunnel’s best track, “Lovers” is a wealthy addition.meh

So, i felt it was necessary that i post his first album. Lots of samples, glitched with some wikid drums. It works really well in a Star Slinger playlist hehe. but if you like Tobacco, Star Slinger, Blackbird Blackbird, or any of that crazy shiz i think you'll be able to dig this. I must admit sometimes he goes too heavy on the glitch but, all in all they are strong beats. really strong beats.

Oxford Mississippi native Deepak Mantena of creative pop-project Junk Culture developed the sound for his newest release, Summer Friends, from a lifetime collection of sounds he’d captured on a handheld recorder. Drawing on inspiration he found in the vibrant harmonies, psychedelic noises and dance rhythms that saturated his environment, he created alluring melodies using guitar, keyboard, and percussion and topped them off with choruses of his own explosive vocals.

Washed Out submerges a sense of intense feeling within its 80s-fantasy electronic ether. Greene's "copy of a copy" distance, then, comes across as a form of emotional repression. The yearning-in-utero effect is strongest on woozy centerpiece "Feel It All Around". With blurry singing, cheap-sounding synths, and a humid, syrupy flow, the track suggests an 80s synth pop hit that won't come straight out and cop to itself-- or a young man in love, too tongue-tied (or too stoned?) to admit it. "You feel it all around yourself," Greene echoes. As for what "it" is, the song never says.

Neon Indianesque space travel tunes. imagine being inside the grid when you listen to the opening track Ramachandran. Glitchy and heavy on the synthesizer. When you hear the beginning Lazer Opera,,, you will be like that copy cattin' s.o.b. it seriously sounds just like derezzed... but just the beginning. But back to the story.. its some glitch hop that will help get you to the chillest groove station in proximity to you.

This time Starfucker has gone into the stars for a heady-electronic "dreamtime". Strategically paced album with rhythm like a black man. That same fucking dude talks during the album, but he tells you some seriously crucial information. Prepare to dance to this man talking you through the grooves.
