Overton Berry / T.O.B.E. /1972

this is one of the most sought after sample albums.

"I had originally only heard the cover of Hey Jude by the O.B. trio and was hugely impressed. I was expecting to have a whole slew of pulsing funky rythyms and bass heavy jams with of course, the ever-funky overton on the keys. This disc is not exactly that, but it is a very intersting blend of some smooth to funky jazz influenced tracks and even a little bit of soulful classical rock influenced tracks (black bottom). It is a curious combination at best, but fascinating and exceedingly well performed. A formidable gem of the northwest."

i'm about to get breaks'd in.

Dan Deacon / Spiderman of the Rings / 2007

long time waiting

Amazon.com

Baltimore-based bedroom electronic pop musician Dan Deacon has made a thrilling, buzzing little album that cagily mixes the throwaway with the epic. The record's centerpiece, a paean to Deacon's hometown called "Wham City," is so smartly constructed, anthemic, and lush, it makes Sufjan Stephens look like a confused, overreaching Boy Scout. While on the subject of comparisons, Deacon is repeatedly compared to Daniel Johnston in interviews. And sure, they both can display a love for whimsy and have been known to record using very inexpensive means, but Johnson seems to have such a wellspring of confusion and fear that he's working from. There's a euphoric thrill to Deacon's squeaky, looped-out music. The opening tune "Woody Woodpecker" piles so many chintzy and cheesy elements together it should be the most annoying thing ever. But it's expertly crafted and kaleidoscopic, and it will only annoy people who hate fun. You should take this song, or the entire album, with you on a first date with you and play it for that person. If they do not like it, you should never date them again, even if they are very rich. --Mike McGonigal

Dre & Em, Best Friends Forever / Dr. Dre & Eminem

Possibly the greatest partnership ever in the game, this is a compilation of every song I could find with Eminem and Dre. They really are best friends.

BFF!

Andre Nickatina / The Greatest Hits

Andre Nickatina is one of those artists who defines what it means to have character as a rapper (something I am thinking about writing about on my hip hop blog). Bitches, blunts, and brew are frequent topics of discussion in his lyrics, but far from the only thing he talks about. Nickatina has a strange fetish for comparing himself to animals (a whale, a barracuda, a lion, a wolverine, and especially all kinds of birds), obsessing about his hair, and frequently letting the listener know that he is, in fact, a Pisces. He is certainly in another league and he's defined a style that is just plain weird, but strangely attracting. Most of the time it might seem like he's just talking about nonsense, but after you listen to enough of his ramblings, you actually feel like you know Andre, and you understand what sets him apart from most modern rappers. Normally an artist might just keep revisiting the same played-out topics of the gangster life, and while Andre makes it clear that he is a gangster, his true quirky character shines through. Also pay attention to the instrumentals, they are diverse to say the least.

The trouble with Nicki's discography is it's incredibly large and diverse, and without an official greatest hits compilation. Honestly, his material has a very low signal-to-noise ratio, and this is my attempt to combine his best songs into one album.

SLEEP DEALER / THE WAY HOME EP / 2009

Sleep Dealer is a post-rock band formed in Moscow, Russia in 2009.

"
Billions of the brightest stars, secret and unknown planets… An eternal silence reigns amidst millions of miles of endless space – the places where only a handful of people have been. Outer space. Will man ever be able to understand it all? What mysteries and discoveries are hidden there? Nobody knows except the dreamers who are inspired by the cosmos to create the most beautiful tales of distant planets and the eternity of existence."

I haven't really gotten into much post-rock stuff but found this album a nice introduction. Soothing and spacey, love those ambient tracksssssss

Quasi-American Gong-2010

Since their conception in 1993 Quasi has been consistently pumping out authentic indie tracks with no frills. The band is lead by an ex-husband and wife team and, since 2007, has included a bassist who tours with them. I saw these fools at Sassy last year and they blew my mind in a really under/overwhelming way. This is their latest album, and one of my favorites.

Rusko / Everyday / 2011

Our fearless leader of dubstep has returned, unveiling his first official release since last summer's floor-wobbling debut album, O.M.G. Rusko's "Everyday" is a huge hands-in-the-air banger to start the summer, and we've got an amazing group of remixes to go alongside it. Netsky pulls off the same trick as Sub Focus did with "Hold On," turning Rusko's pretty production on "Everyday" into an all out smasher. Huge huge tune, but don't sleep on Original Sin's drum n bass remix and the funky garage leaning remix from DJ Q - this is the best remix pack we've had in a long time. The b-side "Lick The Lizard" is a collaboration between Rusko and fellow dubstep pioneer Reso, and it's the perfect companion track to "Everyday," busting out the nasty basslines and pure dubstep sound that Rusko's known for. Quite the return to form."
