Scruffy The Cat-Tiny Days-1987

This is the second release from Scruffy the Cat, an underground Boston band from the 80's. This music is pretty dorky and I almost didn't post this album. What intrigues me about these guys is that there is limited information about them on the internet (no wikipedia page, no lyrics, just a handful of blog posts) and I'm always stoked on mysterious bands. Especially one that has remained relatively unknown for as long as these guys. Their jams are cool if you think about it in context with the dirty punky shit going on at this point in time.

To some, it must seem like this young electronic producer came out of nowhere this year, but those in the know have been following Emancipator since he self-released his first album, “Soon It Will Be Cold Enough,” at the age of 19 in 2006. His agile melodies layered over headnodic, immaculately-produced beats captivated fans across the internet and across the world. “Soon It Will Be Cold Enough” was picked up by Japanese super-producer Nujabes, pressed in Japan and sold 5,000 copies in the first six months. Its has the stylings of early brit pop, peppered with spices similar to The Morning Benders, or Vampire Weekend but without the MSG if you know what I mean! Even a splash of female vocals that are tolerable! woohoo

Here's another release from 2010 that I've had in my library of tunes and just came across today. Really great lo-fi/"bedroom-pop" tracks on this one. Again, this release is fairly short (27 minutes) but my favorite tracks are "Misinterpret My Words," "Vampire Summer," "Just Like Monday," "Ottawa Backfired Soon," and "Nothing and Nowhere to Go." That's half of the album, haha.

A great album from the lost years at the beginning of the millennium, you know the year when your hair was a bit longer than you had previously grown it out to and you voice kept squeaking... yea. well this is Razorlight, if you are unfamiliar with them, you could compare them to The Killers or Kaiser Chiefs. but in 2004 it topped on the UK music charts at #3.

Oh dear how some of us have been waiting for this day. Let me be the first to tell you about it!! This shit is some great strokes material! Many influences are very present and the strokes shine through in a grunge toned light with a kick of electronic vibrations. Strong basslines and great riffage. The further into the album the slower it goes but the groove still flow through..

Dan Auerbach / Keep it Hid / 2009

Daniel Quine Auerbach (born May 14, 1979) is a multi-instrumentalist best known as the guitarist (i didn't know this guy was lead guitar, impressive) and vocalist for The Black Keys, a blues rock band from Akron, Ohio. If you are a fan of the Black Keys you can appreciate this. Its some tasty blues and soul over top some grunge-y funk, my favourite bit is the vocals,, this mothafucka has got to be eating sandpaper for breakfast to be thatt rough.

I am blown away by this.

This mash-up mixtape has been circulating around the blogosphere for a few days MONTHS now, charming it’s way into the hearts of hip-hop and post-punk dream-pop lovers alike. Mixed and spliced with skillful precision by Bay Area DJ Wait What, The Notorious xx started with the curiosity of hearing Biggie’s “Juicy” over The xx’s “VCR”. Since then, DJ Wait What blended words by the late Notorious B.I.G. onto The xx’s entire debut album, creating something original and inspired.

Pogo-Table Scraps-2008

Pogo, musical artist of movie remixing fame, has also come out with a variety of EPs and even a studio album of music that is mostly original in that it is not made from clips of movies. And this shit is dank. Get it up in your iTunes homie. It's kinda sampley, a little glitchy, and a whole lot of electronicalness. It's chill if you know what I mean.

Chris Joss-You've Been Spiked-2004

I heard the title track of this album on my local fusion jazz station last night and had to throw it up here. It's truly funkadelic.

Frenchman Chris Joss is a self-taught multi-instrumentalist and autonomous studio producer. He has been playing in several bands in Europe for quite some time before he started releasing solo albums. Leaving France for London in the early nineties, Joss digested the vibrant music scenes while playing bass or guitar in bands and sound engineering. His music ranges from funk to electronica. Several of his songs have been featured on movies, series, movie trailers, commercials, media software, games and compilation albums.
