Scruffy The Cat-Tiny Days-1987

This is the second release from Scruffy the Cat, an underground Boston band from the 80's. This music is pretty dorky and I almost didn't post this album. What intrigues me about these guys is that there is limited information about them on the internet (no wikipedia page, no lyrics, just a handful of blog posts) and I'm always stoked on mysterious bands. Especially one that has remained relatively unknown for as long as these guys. Their jams are cool if you think about it in context with the dirty punky shit going on at this point in time.

Emancipator-Soon It Will Be Cold Enough-2006

To some, it must seem like this young electronic producer came out of nowhere this year, but those in the know have been following Emancipator since he self-released his first album, “Soon It Will Be Cold Enough,” at the age of 19 in 2006. His agile melodies layered over headnodic, immaculately-produced beats captivated fans across the internet and across the world. “Soon It Will Be Cold Enough” was picked up by Japanese super-producer Nujabes, pressed in Japan and sold 5,000 copies in the first six months. Secret Cities / Strange Hearts / 2011

i pray this is the beginning of the groovy uprising

This album is a mixture of the sweetest sounds from indie pop artists mixed in a lost groovy convent. Its has the stylings of early brit pop, peppered with spices similar to The Morning Benders, or Vampire Weekend but without the MSG if you know what I mean! Even a splash of female vocals that are tolerable! woohoo

Various Artists / Perfection - Mixtape / 2011

I never really got to introduce myself on here so I'll make this quick- My name is Paul and on my free time, I like compiling mixtapes. I'm a fan of anything and everything that appeals to my ears. Whether it's pop or indie (and it's many subcategories), if it sounds good, it's going on my mixtape. "Perfection" is my most recent compilation and is filled with indie, pop, folk and lo-fi tunes. Check out the tracklist after the jump.

If you're musically adventurous, give it a try.

His Clancyness / Always Mist / 2010

Here's another release from 2010 that I've had in my library of tunes and just came across today. Really great lo-fi/"bedroom-pop" tracks on this one. Again, this release is fairly short (27 minutes) but my favorite tracks are "Misinterpret My Words," "Vampire Summer," "Just Like Monday," "Ottawa Backfired Soon," and "Nothing and Nowhere to Go." That's half of the album, haha.

Air Waves / Dungeon Dots / 2010

"Underwater Peoples is proud to present the debut LP from Air Waves. New York/Austin's Nicole Schneit wrote all the songs and plays guitar throughout the album. Her soft, clear voice careens across walking bass lines, big cymbals and brassy guitars.
Her songs are universally described as warm, inviting and bittersweet. Nicole's pop reaches great depths, enticing all who hear to stay and listen. Dungeon Dots, comes out on November 30th and features Sharon Van Etten, as well as YellowFever's Jennifer Moore."

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. / Horse Power - EP / 2010

One of my favorite releases from last year. The tags speak for itself- my favorite tracks are "Vocal Chords" and their rendition of the Beach Boys' "God Only Knows." Their debut album will be released on June 7 and is titled "It's A Corporate World." You can stream their first single, "Morning Thought," at their Bandcamp page.

ANR / Stay Kids / 2011

I've been meaning to post this album for a while but just never got to it until now. Anyways, here are some quick press notes about the band:

“laptop-laced mix of guitar rock, crunked party beats, Hot Chip but….soaring stadium rock” -Stereogum
“A marvel of melodic majesty, file next to Jamie Lidell, MGMT”-The Guardian
“post apocalyptic Disney sondtrack music”-Nylon

Craft Spells / Idle Labor / 2011

"Craft Spells make ifantastic bedroom pop that is one part 80's New Romantic and another part Dream Pop. People enamored with Glo-Fi/Chillwave should also take not because their production and use of synths will be right up your alley if not entirely hanging ten on top of the Chillwave. "The Fog Rose High" wouldn't be out of place in an 80's John Cusack movie, you know in that scene where he and the girl finally "fall in love." Or "Azalea" which channels a fantastic Stephin Merritt (sans the baritone) at the beach in a most pleasant way. Really, really great stuff."- Mishkanyc.com

SALVA / COMPLEX HOUSING / 2011

"The simpler and less frantic things get, the more pedestrian a track can feel-- the glimmering electro-house/UK funky fusion of "Keys Open Doors" and the shamelessly (yet effectively) Joker-aping "Icey" are catchy, but nothing earth-shaking-- yet even those moments still carry the weight of music that sounds like it comes from a place of genuine adventurousness. As much of a polyglot parade of signifiers as it sometimes threatens to become, Complex Housing coheres enough to make the quartet of other producers' remixes tacked on at the end feel like a distracting afterthought (even if they'd be good enough for a high-grade EP on their own). Underneath all the familiar sounds is the imprint of someone who knows how to make the pieces actually fit, and if it's still an issue of working out the difference between distillation and construction, at least this first step of progress has some engaging energy to it. Salva's clearly been listening to all the right records-- and learning all the right lessons." - Nate Patrin, Pitchfork

MONOGOLD / THE SOFTEST GLOW / 2011

"Monogold is a 3 piece hailing from Brooklyn, NY. Their DIY approach to music has enabled them to self record and produce their own sound in their personal studio. Their most recent release and first full-length album is 2011’s “The Softest Glow”. Their 2009 EP, “We Animals”, continues to receive rave reviews from blogs and magazines throughout the US and abroad."

I didn't know what to expect when I found this gem but after listening to the second track Spirit or Something I knew this was a diamond in the ruffffffffffff
I feel like I'm hanging out in the forest with my deer pals, smoking bowls and exploring mother nature. I mean.. look at the damn album art.

Razorlight / Up All Night / 2004

A great album from the lost years at the beginning of the millennium, you know the year when your hair was a bit longer than you had previously grown it out to and you voice kept squeaking... yea. well this is Razorlight, if you are unfamiliar with them, you could compare them to The Killers or Kaiser Chiefs. but in 2004 it topped on the UK music charts at #3.

Alex Tuner- Submarine

Well here is my first DMS post and why not start with my most recent music. Here is the soundtrack from the Movie Submarine in which Alex Turner wrote 6 songs for. He still has it as an amazing lyricist; it's such a smooth collection of songs where his wordplay truly shines.

The Strokes / Angles / 2011

Oh dear how some of us have been waiting for this day. Let me be the first to tell you about it!! This shit is some great strokes material! Many influences are very present and the strokes shine through in a grunge toned light with a kick of electronic vibrations. Strong basslines and great riffage. The further into the album the slower it goes but the groove still flow through..

i think this will doo....

Dan Auerbach / Keep it Hid / 2009

one step behind.

Daniel Quine Auerbach (born May 14, 1979) is a multi-instrumentalist best known as the guitarist (i didn't know this guy was lead guitar, impressive) and vocalist for The Black Keys, a blues rock band from Akron, Ohio. If you are a fan of the Black Keys you can appreciate this. Its some tasty blues and soul over top some grunge-y funk, my favourite bit is the vocals,, this mothafucka has got to be eating sandpaper for breakfast to be thatt rough.

The Notorious XX / 2010

I am blown away by this.

This mash-up mixtape has been circulating around the blogosphere for a few days MONTHS now, charming it’s way into the hearts of hip-hop and post-punk dream-pop lovers alike. Mixed and spliced with skillful precision by Bay Area DJ Wait What, The Notorious xx started with the curiosity of hearing Biggie’s “Juicy” over The xx’s “VCR”. Since then, DJ Wait What blended words by the late Notorious B.I.G. onto The xx’s entire debut album, creating something original and inspired.

Wow.

Pogo-Table Scraps-2008

Pogo, musical artist of movie remixing fame, has also come out with a variety of EPs and even a studio album of music that is mostly original in that it is not made from clips of movies. And this shit is dank. Get it up in your iTunes homie. It's kinda sampley, a little glitchy, and a whole lot of electronicalness. It's chill if you know what I mean.

Chris Joss-You've Been Spiked-2004

I heard the title track of this album on my local fusion jazz station last night and had to throw it up here. It's truly funkadelic.
Frenchman Chris Joss is a self-taught multi-instrumentalist and autonomous studio producer. He has been playing in several bands in Europe for quite some time before he started releasing solo albums. Leaving France for London in the early nineties, Joss digested the vibrant music scenes while playing bass or guitar in bands and sound engineering. His music ranges from funk to electronica. Several of his songs have been featured on movies, series, movie trailers, commercials, media software, games and compilation albums.
